CHATS and TRCA – A Full Circle Moment!
For most of the last 10 years, CHATS and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) have been working hand in hand to create age-friendly outdoor spaces and develop inclusive programming for adults of all ages and stages. Together, we’ve conducted site visits to identify barriers and explore solutions, brainstormed opportunities, participated in intergenerational gatherings where students could test their programming ideas, and travelled with clients to sites such as Kortright Centre, Bruce’s Mill, and Lake St. George. This year, for the first time, our collaboration included a 10-week walking program at Bruce’s Mill for some of our Stouffville clients.
The goal of this collaboration has been to strengthen TRCA’s ability to welcome older adults and individuals with disabilities alongside children and youth—ensuring that everyone can share in the benefits of nature while learning about the importance of conservation. A key focus has been finding the best ways to support older adults in spending time outdoors. With TRCA’s generous support, we’ve continued to discover new and improved opportunities to make this possible.
On July 23, the vision came to life when 103 CHATS Outreach Clients, along with staff and volunteers, joined the TRCA team at Bruce’s Mill for a truly memorable day. Participants were bussed to the site where they enjoyed facilitated activities, nature hikes, bird watching, and storytelling. Thanks to Caitlin and the team at TRCA for many hours spent planning, organizing and collaborating to make the day a success. She and her team facilitated interesting and engaging activities, demonstrating their passion for nature, their expertise and ability to engage our groups in meaningful and enjoyable ways. A picnic lunch, generously sponsored by Metro Aurora and Yasaman Restaurant and Catering in Richmond Hill gave everyone a chance to relax and socialize on what turned out to be a picture-perfect summer day!
