Advocating for CHATS Seniors
As our population ages, the need for high-quality home and community care for seniors is growing at an unprecedented rate. By 2051, nearly one in four York Region residents will be over the age of 65, with the 75+ demographic expected to more than triple. This shift places immense pressure on the healthcare system and highlights the urgent need to support organizations like CHATS – Community & Home Assistance to Seniors.
For decades, CHATS has been a cornerstone of our community, empowering seniors to live independently and with dignity. Their services include home care, caregiver support, transportation, and more – all essential to ensuring older adults can age in the right place. However, the demand for these services is outpacing available resources.
Acknowledging Support from the York Region Liberal Caucus
We are grateful for the York Region Liberal Caucus’s recent letter of support for CHATS and their advocacy for increased funding to address critical needs in community support services for seniors. The letter underscores the urgency of the situation, highlighting the growing senior population and the challenges facing organizations like CHATS in meeting this demand.
The York Region Liberal Caucus has echoed CHATS’ call for:
A 5% funding increase to expand access to services, modernize infrastructure, and improve care delivery.
A 3% compensation increase for community care workers to address workforce shortages and enhance retention.
Their support reinforces the importance of addressing these needs to ensure seniors can age with dignity and choice in their homes and communities.
The Challenges We Face
In 2024 alone, some community support organizations have reported an eightfold increase in waitlists. The shortage of Personal Support Workers (PSWs) is equally concerning. York Region will need an additional 6,800 PSWs by 2028 to maintain current service levels. Without action, seniors risk losing access to vital care, leading to increased hospitalizations and long-term care admissions.
The Solution
CHATS, in partnership with the Ontario Community Support Association, is advocating for these critical funding and compensation increases. These investments are not just numbers—they represent opportunities to expand services, support caregivers, and empower seniors to age where they feel most comfortable: at home.
