Ways to Give
As a not-for-profit charitable organization, CHATS depends on the generosity of valued donors.
Although CHATS is partially funded by the Central Local Health Integration Network, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and the United Way of Toronto & York Region, the demand for increased services and programs necessitates the need for additional funding.
With the support of our donors, CHATS can continue to provide York Region and South Simcoe with leadership that delivers quality care, service, and innovation, while enhancing the independence of older adults living at home.

Gifts in Will
Make a lasting impact with a gift to CHATS in your will
Leaving a gift to CHATS allows you to leave a larger gift than would be possible during your lifetime, while still retaining control of your assets.
A charitable gift in your will (known as a bequest) may be the biggest gift of your life and has the power to help even more seniors in our communities. You can leave a gift of securities, cash or even a percentage of your estate. Your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt that can lower or even eliminate estate taxes.
Ways you can leave a gift in your will:
- Leave a specific dollar amount
- Leave a residual bequest ‒ a share of the remainder of your estate after other needs are met
- Leave a contingent bequest ‒ a share of your estate after your other beneficiaries have passed on
There are many other ways to remember CHATS in your will, including annuities, bonds, real estate, or life insurance policies which name CHATS as a beneficiary. To receive more information about Legacy Giving please contact CHATS by phone 905-713-3373 or by email waystogive@chats.on.ca
Gift of Stocks
A tax advantage for you that supports others too
Donating publicly traded securities and mutual funds to CHATS allows you to amplify the impact of your gift so that you can make a big difference in the lives of seniors in our communities.
By donating securities you can receive a double tax benefit – you eliminate the capital gains tax you would have to pay if you sold your appreciated securities, and you receive a charitable tax receipt for your donation!
The benefits:
- Allows you to amplify the impact of your gift
- You pay no tax on the capital gains that have accumulated on the securities
- You receive a charitable tax receipt for your donation
CHATS strongly recommends you seek the professional services of a lawyer, accountant or financial advisor to ensure that you consider your financial goals, review your tax situation and tailor your gift to best fit your circumstances.
Other Ways to Give
Life Insurance
By leaving a gift of life insurance to CHATS, you can make premium payments that has the potential to turn into an impactful gift. There are three ways to make a gift of life insurance.
- Purchase a new life insurance policy and name CHATS as the owner and beneficiary. The premiums you will pay qualify for a charitable tax receipt.
- Donate an existing policy to CHATS. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of your life insurance policy.
- Name CHATS as the beneficiary of your existing life insurance policy. In addition, your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt when the proceeds are paid out.
Retirement Assets
You can also choose to make CHATS a beneficiary of your Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs) or Registered Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSA). By doing this, you can make a significant gift in the future while retaining use of your registered funds during your lifetime.
Endowment Fund
A personal endowment fund is an impactful way to ensure that CHATS can continue to support seniors in need well into the future. With a one-time donation, a pledge over time or through a gift in your will, your fund can be named after you, your family, or in honour of a loved one.
Please note, a minimum of $25,000 is required to set up a named endowment fund. However, it is possible to establish the fund with an annual gift of $5,000 over five years or through a gift in a will.
Crypto Currency
By donating appreciated cryptocurrency that has been held longer than one year, you do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it on your taxes. This makes cryptocurrency donations one of the most tax efficient ways to support a cause you care about.
To receive more information about these gifting options please contact CHATS at 905-713-3373 or by email waystogive@chats.on.ca.
